Perhaps most famous as the home of author James Herriot of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ fame, and birthplace of Thomas Lord after whom the Lord’s Cricket Ground is named, Thirsk is a small market town. Located eight miles south-east of county town Northallerton, it is also on the doorstep of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, making it a popular destination for tourists.

Archaeological investigations suggest that the settlement of Thirsk dates back as far as 500 to 600 BC. Mentioned in the Domesday Book as Tresche, claims over Thirsk date back to the Norman invasion and it has passed through various royal hands since, with the Bell family owning it into the 20th Century.

Thirsk is the setting for a twice-weekly market which was established in 1145 and has been best known for industries like leather tanning and saddlery, and farm tools manufacture. Its modern economy is a mix of manufacturing, retail, hospitality and tourism, with a range of restaurants pubs and town and nearby attractions like the World of James Herriot Museum, White Horse if Kilburn and Sutton Bank National Park.
