Property In Selby

Located just 14 miles south of York, Selby is a popular commuter town for people working there and also in cities like Leeds, Hull and Bradford.

Situated on the River Ouse and originating as a Viking settlement, it also has a strong industrial heritage of its own, as a former major mining town and shipbuilding centre (the famous Greenpeace vessel the Rainbow Warrior was manufactured there) and an important port on the Selby Canal.

It is also widely credited as the birthplace of King Henry I, the fourth son of William the Conqueror, in either 1068 or 1069. Selby Abbey is well-known for its 14 th Century ‘Washington Window’, which shows the heraldic arms of the ancestors of George Washington, first United States president, which is also believed to have inspired the design of the Stars and Stripes flag.
